Most seashells are the hard outer structures made by mollusks: snails, clams, oysters, scallops, tusk shells, chitons, and a few cephalopods.

The animal’s mantle lays down layers of calcium carbonate and proteins. The pattern is not painted on afterward—the shell is literally built that way.

Scallops can have dozens to hundreds of tiny blue eyes along the mantle edge—and some species can clap their shells to swim.

The chaotic apartment

Oyster shells are irregular because they grow attached to surfaces and neighbors. Their reefs create habitat for other species.

Hold many hollow objects near your ear and you’ll hear a similar rush. The shape emphasizes bands of surrounding sound—and your own body noise can contribute too.

Before you pocket it, check if somebody still lives there.

Empty shells become homes for hermit crabs, shelter for tiny animals, and eventually part of the beach itself. Collect lightly—and skip anything occupied.
